Remembering Sister Jackie Hudson

Sister Jackie Hudson was a member of VFP 92 who joined Veterans For Peace, as an Associate, in 2003. Sister Jackie died on August 3 of multiple myeloma at Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton. Funds for a donation in her honor to the Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action will be collected at the August General Membership meeting this Saturday. Below is the text of her obituary from Pax Christi USA.

OBITUARY: Sr. Jackie Hudson, prophet and activist – PRESENTE!

Pax Christi USA learned last week of the passing of Sr. Jackie Hudson.

"Our hearts were heavy when we learned of Sr. Jackie's passing," stated Johnny Zokovitch, Director of Communications at Pax Christi USA. "Her witness inspired so many of us, and in her spirit we will continue to undertake the work that was so important to her–working for a nuclear weapon-free world."

Sr. Jackie was one of the most prophetic voices for nuclear disarmament within the peace movement and had participated in dozens of protests, including being arrested after acts of nonviolent civil disobedience on numerous occasions. She had served sentences of 6 and 18 months for her disarmament actions.

"Surely Jackie never leaves us from her home in the communion of saints," stated Pax Christi USA members Sr. Kay O'Neil and Sr. Michelle Meyers from Minnesota. "We write with tears, love, and prayers of gratitude for her magnificent life. She continues to comfort and challenge us in death. May all who lived and worked with Jackie be held in tender love."

Sr. Jackie joined the Dominican order in 1952 and was educated in music and religious education at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. She went on to teach music for 29 years. After retiring from teaching, Sr. Jackie started studying the dangers of nuclear weapons and nuclear radiation and joined a Michigan faith-based group that demonstrated at nuclear sites. And thus, a second career began.

Pax Christi USA gives thanks for the life and witness of Sr. Jackie Hudson. We are blessed to know that her spirit will continue to move among us and guide us in our work for peace with justice in our world.
