VETERANS FOR PEACE COMMEMORATES THE END OF WW1 AND CELEBRATES PEACE

On November 11th, Veterans For Peace will honor the original intent of Armistice Day, now called Veterans Day, with a ringing of bells at St James Cathedral, Seattle. This Armistice Day, VFP calls on theU.S. public to say no to more war and to demand justice and peace, at home and abroad. This November 11th, 10:30 AM, on the south side of St James Cathedral, 804 Ninth Ave Seattle (First Hill) Veterans for Peace will join with others at for a ceremony that will include a short statement on Armistice Day, the ringing of the bells, a moment of silence, and some readings commemorating the spirit of the day. White “Peace Poppies” will be handed out to commemorate all the victims of all wars.

St James Cathedral continues a tradition of bells commemorating Armistice Day, and Veterans for Peace continues its support honoring the original purpose of the holiday. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, 1918, the guns finally fell silent on the Western Frontof WW11, ending the slaughter that took the lives of seventeen million people. In November 1919 President Wilson signed a proclamation commemorating the end of the war which stated “…the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride for those who died in the country’s service…” and in 1926 the US Congress passed a resolution stating “it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed toperpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations…”

In 1938 Congress made November 11th a legal holiday, celebrated as Armistice Day and dedicated to the cause of world peace and honoring veterans but after World War II, the U.S. Congress decided to rebrand November 11 as Veterans Day which turned a day to perpetuate peace into a day of militaristic displays, patriotic jingoism, a one day” thanks for your service”, a free meal or store discounts. The poet Wilfred Owen, killed on November 4th 1918 wrote in a poem entitled Dulce et Decorum est a quote from the Roman poet Horace. Owen calls it the” old lie” that “It is sweet and proper to die for one’s country”. Another poet, Rudyard Kipling, wrote on the death of his son John . “If any question why we died, / Tell them, because our fathers lied,”.Too often rhetoric and patriotic symbols are used instead of genuine compensation for the extraordinary sacrifices and services of military personnel. And since 90 percent of the victims of wars are now civilians, by honoring only veterans, the public is distracted from the awful price paid by those other than veterans. Armistice Day celebrations have always honored veterans. Veterans Day celebrations should also remember that peace was something for which soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen gave their lives. “There is no way to peace; peace is the way” A.J. Muste

Exhibit: Dissent and Resistance within the Military

East Reading Room, Collins Memorial Library at the University of Puget Sound

September 28-October 28

(from the website at: https://wagingpeaceinvietnam.com/exhibits)

“During America’s war in Vietnam, the antiwar movement among active-duty soldiers and veterans was central to the success of the larger U.S. protest movement—and had a profound impact on the course of the war. In the mid-Sixties, as the U.S. escalated troop numbers, tens of thousands of soldiers, sailors and pilots refused to fight, sail and fly bombing missions. As scholar David Cortright notes: “It is arguable that by 1970 U.S. ground troops in Vietnam had ceased to function as an effective fighting force. The disintegration of military morale was a factor in the Nixon administration’s decision to accelerate troop withdrawals.”

PRESS RELEASE: 21 September 2022 “OBJECT WAR CAMPAIGN” LAUNCH : Petition to support Conscientious Objectors and Deserters from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine

PRESS RELEASE     21 September 2022

“OBJECT WAR CAMPAIGN” LAUNCH : Petition to support Conscientious Objectors and Deserters from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine

On the occasion of the International Day of Peace, 21st September, Connection e.V., the International Fellowship of Reconciliation, the European Office for Conscientious Objection and War Resisters’ International are calling for a signature campaign for deserters and conscientious objectors from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. The #ObjectWarCampaign calls on all citizens from everywhere to join the global effort to ensure protection and asylum to conscientious objectors and deserters from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine involved in the current war in the region. They are our hope to refuse war and let peace prevail!

On April 6, 2022, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, had called on Russian soldiers to desert and promised them protection under refugee law. So far, this promise has not been fulfilled.

Within the scope of #ObjectWarCampaign, a petition has been prepared for everyone to sign in. The petition is addressed to the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Council Charles Michel and the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola. The petition emphasizes the need to uphold the right to asylum to conscientious objectors and deserters from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine by hosting states. The petition launched on the WeMove.eu website can now be signed in GermanEnglishFrenchItalian and Greek.

There are an estimated 100,000 Russian military draftees and deserters refusing the war of aggression. An estimated 22,000 Belarusian military draftees have left their country because they don’t want to participate in the war in Ukraine. Everyone who has refused service risks several years of prosecution because of their stand against the war. They are hoping for protection in various countries.

Ukraine suspended the right to conscientious objection and closed the border for men between 18 and 60. Over 100,000 men have evaded war involvement in Ukraine and fled abroad. Currently, Ukrainian citizens have temporary residence in the European Union. The #ObjectWarCampaign petition demands that the right to conscientious objection to military service is fully guaranteed in Ukraine.

The petition signatures  are a crucial sign of support for conscientious objectors and deserters. This campaign highlights the importance of opening borders to those who oppose the war at great personal risk in their countries, and calls on everyone around the world to support those who refuse to fight and kill.

Every recruit can be a conscientious objector, every soldier a deserter. Let’s support those who refuse to kill and end war together!

#ObjectWarCampaign
#StandWithObjectors

The launch of the petition has been anticipated by an appeal sent in June 2022, to the European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe -supported by 60 organizations from 20 countries – detailing why protection and support for deserters and conscientious objectors on all sides of the Ukrainian war is necessary and moreover that it is a human right. There have already been discussions about this in the European Parliament.

Also note: GABRIELA, Students supporting Palestine, BAYAN, Stop the Sweeps! And other orgs are part of ILPS.
ILPS is encouraging organizations to join them. They said that to become part of ILPS a n organization needs to agree with their unity on one of the 20 issues they deal with. ILPS is open to mass organizations, not political parties or individuals.
ILPS can present more info about themselves at an educational at our GMM. I think ASAP would be good. They are be younger, diverse people who are consciously anti-imperialist.
